This holiday season, give the gift of a “clearly” amazing smile!

Hey parents! Focusing on your kids’ teeth and oral health so much that you’re neglecting your own? If you’ve been thinking about having your own set of perfectly-aligned teeth, Dr. Tina Siu and our staff at Siu Orthodontics can help! We are specially trained to offer an adult-friendly option for straightening teeth called Invisalign.

This course of treatment consists of a set of clear aligners that are to be worn all day and night, except for meals, brushing, and flossing, when you can easily slip them out to make eating and cleaning a snap!

Because they’re clear, your teeth will be steadily straightening – and no one will know it but you! Please give us a call to set up a complimentary orthodontic consultation this holiday season, so we can discuss the specifics of your treatment. Dr. Siu is a Certified Invisalign Provider in San Marino and Pasadena.

Happy Thanksgiving from Siu Orthodontics!

Dr. Tina Siu and all of us at Siu Orthodontics extend our best wishes to you, our patients, referring doctors and families, for a wonderful Thanksgiving.

We appreciate the opportunity to work together with you in the creation of your ideal smile and look forward to the day when your treatment is completed and you join our family of beautiful smiles, which we create daily at our San Marino office. It's a big food holiday, so be careful what you eat, especially with those braces!

Besides turkey, here are a few foods you can enjoy at Thanksgiving dinner:

• Mashed potatoes or other cooked potatoes

• Corn (if cut off the cob)

• Stuffing

• Yams

• Pumpkin pie and other desserts such as cake and ice cream (but make sure to brush afterward!)

If you are still in search of some wonderful recipes, our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists have lots of delicious recipes that will satisfy both your sugar craving and hunger now that the weather is cold. We hope you have a safe and fun Thanksgiving this year with your friends and family. Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here at Siu Orthodontics!

Ask Dr. Siu: Do germs really live on toothbrushes?

Fall is upon us, and with it comes the dreaded cold and flu season. After recovering from your cold, Dr. Tina Siu will tell you one of the most important steps you can take to avoid becoming reinfected is replacing your toothbrush!

Germs can linger on the bristles, and you risk prolonging your sickness by continuing to use the same toothbrush. Be smart - keep a spare, just in case! To protect your toothbrush from bacteria all year long, consider the following tips:

• Wash your hands before and after brushing

• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen

• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster

• Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Worn bristles are less effective in properly cleaning your teeth, and can actually be damaging to teeth if used too long!

We hope these tips help! Feel free to call us at Siu Orthodontics if you have any questions or ask us on Facebook. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Dr. Siu wants to know: what's on your fall reading list?

This week marks National Young Reader’s Week, and during this time, it’s more important than ever to remind your child to read on a regular basis. After all, reading helps kids develop the mind, expands a child’s knowledge base, activates his or her flow of ideas and boosts their confidence. Plus, reading is always fun!

Tell us: Are you reading a book this fall? If so, what’s on your reading list?

If you’re out of ideas for great fall reads, we encourage you to ask our staff for suggestions, and we’ll be happy to provide a few great titles. You may also ask a local librarian in San Marino, Arcadia or Pasadena for some suggestions or check out various fall books for kids and teens that we found this morning, courtesy of Barnes & Noble.

Happy reading everybody!

Dr. Siu and team want to know: How was your Halloween?

Happy November, everybody! Believe it or not, we’re almost in full holiday mode! But before Dr. Tina Siu and our team forget about the spooky month that was, we’d like to know how you celebrated Halloween! What did you wear? How much candy did you get? Did you have fun?

If you have any photos or videos from Halloween night that you would like to share with us, please send them our way or feel free to post them on our Facebook page! We hope you all had a happy and safe Halloween! Also, what are you up to this month? Anything exciting happening in your life? If so, we’d love to hear all about it.

Lastly, have you been in for a dental checkup lately? It’s important that you see your general dentist here in San Marino, Arcadia or Pasadena, as well as visiting Siu Orthodontics during your orthodontic treatment. If you have questions about your treatment or just want some general information, give us a call or ask us during your next visit with Dr. Siu!

Have a great rest of the week!

The thing that makes our office special is the friendly atmosphere we maintain throughout the day. Straight talk with Dr. Siu

Some people wonder why Dr. Tina Siu and our staff at Siu Orthodontics work tirelessly to give our patients straight teeth. Of course it’s nice to have a smile full of evenly aligned teeth, but did you know that straightening your teeth at Siu Orthodontics can keep them healthier? Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime!

Straight teeth are less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque, the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and, they are easier to keep clean!

If you’re wondering whether your teeth might cause problems because they are out of alignment, please give us a call to set up a complimentary orthodontic consultation at our convenient office in San Marino. Dr. Siu can help you decide whether or not you will benefit from orthodontic treatment.

Questions? Give us a call at (626) 537-4170 or ask us on Facebook!

BOO! Braces-Friendly Halloween Recipes!

Last week, you may remember, we discussed October being National Orthodontic Health Month and listed a few foods Dr. Tina Siu wants you to stay away from this Halloween season, as well as during your time in braces.

All those sweet, sour and sticky candies may taste great, but these treats can damage your teeth and braces too! Did you know sour candies can be acidic to your teeth, and actually wear down the enamel that protects them? This can cause tooth decay and cavities!

Instead of candy, try these braces-friendly treats, courtesy of the American Association of Orthodontists.

At Siu Orthodontics, October is National Orthodontic Health Month!

We hope you're having a wonderful week! October is National Orthodontic Health Month, and our staff at Siu Orthodontics wanted to remind our patients to be careful when they bite into their treats this Halloween season. Remember, caramels, taffy, nuts, bubble gum, popcorn kernels and suckers are some of the foods you should be avoiding! Indulging in these foods can break your braces and lengthen your treatment time at Dr. Siu's office!

• Caramel
• Nuts
• Popcorn (including un-popped kernels)
• Taffy
• Jelly beans
• Hard pretzels
• Licorice
• Bubblegum
• Potato chips
• Ice

If you damage your braces, please give Dr. Tina Siu and our staff a call immediately. Typically, small problems can be solved by giving us a call at 626-796-0615. Loose brackets or wires can usually be made more comfortable by applying some wax until the you can come into our San Marino office.

Have a wonderful weekend!

September featured patient review!

Every now and then, we like to feature great reviews from our wonderful patients. Here's a testimonial from my patient, Madeline.

"My experience with Dr. Siu was nothing short of wonderful. From the moment you walk in to the moment you leave, you are greeted with smiles and sincere care. I felt like the staff took great care in tending to my teeth and encouraged my progress every step of the way. My greatest praise would be to Dr. Siu's ability to keep my removal on schedule, with my diligent co-operation, of course! I am overjoyed by the new smile they have given me! Thank you Dr. Siu!"

"My daughter is turning seven - when should I bring her in for a consultation?"

Great question, and GREAT timing! Braces were originally considered to be best appropriate for teens. But these days, kids as old as seven are beginning their orthodontic treatment. Because preadolescent kids are typically not self-conscious, our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists suggest it could be a good idea to start early.

Experts, however, say it depends on the treatment required. Some children who get braces at an early age end up in a second phase of treatment, and end up having braces well into their teenage years despite starting young.

Most orthodontic treatment begins between ages nine and 14, and the folks at AAO estimate most orthodontic treatment lasts from one to three years, with two years being the average. It’s important, however, that children be screened no later than age seven for Dr. Tina Siu to assess what the best age for treatment is.

Our staff hope this helps! Give us a call at 626-796-0615 if you have any questions about your child’s treatment or to schedule a complimentary orthodontic consultation! Enjoy your weekend!

Dr. Tina Siu and staff, helping dispel all the myths about braces

Look, we know there are quite a few myths about orthodontics (and orthodontists) out there nowadays. But before you buy into those myths, Dr. Tina Siu and our staff think you should get the facts first! Our good friends at the American Association of Orthodontists set the record straight (no pun intended) and have provided some information that sheds some light on the myths and facts of orthodontics. We encourage you to check them out today!

If you have any questions about orthodontics or your treatment here at Siu Orthodontics, feel free to give us a call at 626-796-0615. Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend!!

Staff Spotlight: Kathy at Siu Orthodontics

Kathy is the smiling face you will see when you first walk into Dr. Siu's San Marino office. She will usually greet you with your name because she has an awesome memory and can remember everyone's name...not only our patients but their parents and siblings and dogs and cats as well! She adores animals of all kinds but especially cats. If you see her at the pet shop she's probably talking to the dogs at doggie day care or fawning over the cats that are up for adoption.

Kathy is the original "Chatty Kathy" but in a good way! She can handle three phone lines at one time and make everyone feel like they are the most important person. In addition, she finds a way to get all our patients into the schedule so the office runs as smoothly as possible.

Dr. Siu is lucky enough to have had Kathy working her front desk for over 20 years...from the first day Dr. Siu started this office. Our patients and parents love Kathy for her kind and sweet way of talking with them. She enjoys getting to know the patients and wants to be friends with them all. We have patients who come into the office just to talk to Kathy, even if they don't have an appointment!

Many of our parents have told Dr. Siu how great Kathy is at the front desk. Her excellent work ethics and diligence is evident everyday. She truly loves her job and is devoted to the patients she cares for.

We are so happy to have Kathy working at Dr. Siu's office! If you haven't come by the office lately, give Kathy a call or stop by to see her. She'll probably remember exactly who you are!

Fun facts with Siu Orthodontics!

At Siu Orthodontics, we know our patients love fun facts - LOVE THEM. Who doesn't? The American Association of Orthodontists has come up with some fun facts about orthodontics that Dr. Siu and our staff thought you would enjoy. We'll post more fun facts soon!

Dr. Tina Siu wants to know: Do you know where your mouth guard is?

Summer is still here, but wouldn’t you believe it, it’s almost time for fall sports! Dr. Tina Siu will tell you that the summer and fall months bring an increase in outdoor activities and a greater chance of damaging your teeth. If you play sports, it's important that you consult Dr. Siu for special precautions, including wearing a protective mouth guard for contact- and non-contact sports. Be sure to avoid mouth guards that custom form to your teeth, however, as these will resist any tooth movements Dr. Siu is trying to achieve with your treatment.

In case of any accident involving the face, check your mouth and the appliances immediately. If teeth are loosened or the appliances damaged, please schedule an appointment with your general dentist or with Dr. Siu.

Remember, only by using a mouth guard and other forms of facial protection can kids with braces avoid serious sports injuries. Please give us a call if you have any questions about mouth guards or your treatment with Dr. Siu.

Featured testimonial from Joseph, who just got his braces off at Siu Orthodontics!

“For most people undergoing orthodontic treatment, a trip to get your braces tightened can be traumatizing enough to ruin your week. However, I can say with confidence that Dr. Siu and her amazing staff made every appointment a bright spot in my day. The warm, welcoming atmosphere of the office combined with Dr. Siu's gentle, conservative approach caused me to actually look forward to my appointments! After two years of treatment, I am overjoyed with my results, and I jump at every opportunity to flash my pearly whites.”

The importance of oral hygiene, from Dr. Tina Siu

Dr. Tina Siu provides dental health screenings for several groups, including the "Give Kids a Smile" program. Young & Healthy in Pasadena has a dental health screening as well as the San Gabriel Valley Foundation for Dental Health. Dr. Siu enjoys helping these lower income families be more aware of their dental health - community service is very important to Dr. Siu. She believes in giving back to the community that has given so much to her, and tries to emphasize the importance of daily oral hygiene and visits to the dentist for dental cleanings twice a year. She reminds the kids that "2" is the number to remember when your talking about your teeth: Brush your teeth 2 times a day, for 2 minutes each time, and visit your dentist 2 times a year!

Regular health screenings can help find problems before they start. They also can help find problems early, when your chances for treatment are better. By getting the right health services, screenings and treatments with Dr. Siu, you are taking steps that help your chances for living a longer, healthier life!

"Hey Dr. Siu! What's the deal with retainers?"

Have you recently completed your orthodontic treatment with Dr. Tina Siu? If so, we’d like to congratulate you again! Now that your braces have been removed, Dr. Siu will provide—or has provided you—with retainers. After braces are removed, Dr. Siu will tell you that teeth may shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Retainers, however, provide that stabilization, and are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed by Dr. Siu and our staff is the best way to make sure that the treatment improvements at Siu Orthodontics last for a lifetime.

To learn more about the advantages of wearing retainers after your orthodontic treatment, please visit our website for retainer instructions and check out this helpful article about retainers from KidsHealth or give us a call at 626-537-4170!

Ask Dr. Siu: When should my child visit for a consultation?

Many parents here in San Marino, Pasadena and surrounding communities assume they must wait until their child has all of his or her permanent teeth to come in for a consultation with Dr. Tina Siu, only to find that treatment would have been much easier if started earlier. Did you know the American Association of Orthodontists recommend that every child have an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven?

That's right - age seven.

Orthodontic evaluation at an early age provides one of two positive outcomes: For some, early identification or problems will lead to easier or shorter orthodontic treatment in the future. For others, a healthy prognosis will provide immediate peace of mind.

Early evaluation, of course, may signal a need for early treatment. For some children, early treatment can prevent physical and emotional trauma. Aside from years of harmful teasing, crooked teeth are also prone to injury and detrimental to good oral hygiene. So if your child is nearing age seven, we invite you to give us a call at Siu Orthodontics to schedule a complimentary consultation.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone!

Invisalign: is it for everyone? Dr. Siu explains....

Perhaps you're wondering what Invisalign treatment at Siu Orthodontics is really like, and what effect it will have on your day-to-day activities. You might be wondering: Will Invisalign slur my speech? Will people know I'm in treatment? At Siu Orthodontics, we'll tell you that you're not alone in your concerns! Dr. Tina Siu and our team thought we’d take a moment and discuss these clear aligners today.

If you've qualified for Invisalign, you'll wear each set of aligners for about 2 weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move — little by little, week by week — until they have straightened to the final position Dr. Siu has prescribed. You'll visit Dr. Siu about once every 6 weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned.

Not only are the aligners invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment. Plus, brushing and flossing are no problem. They are also comfortable, with no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment. And no metal and wires usually means you spend less time in our office getting adjustments.

Dr. Siu is a certified Invisalign provider in San Marino, Pasadena and surrounding communities in Los Angeles County. If you have questions about Invisalign, or would like to find out if you are a candidate for Invisalign treatment at Siu Orthodontics, please give us a call at 626-537-4170.

Have a GREAT rest of your Father's Day weekend everyone!

Dr. Tina Siu provides a few summer health tips

School is out for many and soon for all so summertime is here! We're all ready for a break from the regular schedule and whether you go on a long trip or a short one, be sure to bring your travelling toothbrush and toothpaste along! Dr. Siu has a great toothbrush that allows you to store your toothpaste in the handle! Be sure to pick one up for your next vacation. It's very handy.

Flossing with braces can be difficult on the road or at home. Superfloss works well if you are looking for something to buy at the pharmacy or come by the office to get other tools that make flossing with braces easier.

The main thing you want to be sure to do is to brush for at least two minutes and to concentrate your efforts on the tooth surfaces near your gums. This is the place that plaque builds up the most and can be harmful to your teeth and gums. So, on the upper teeth, brush above the braces near the gums and on the lower teeth brush below the braces near the gums. Give it a good scrub all around and try to push the bristles between the teeth and under the wires. Finally, rinse thoroughly and use those cheek muscles to push the water around and get all the bits and pieces out from between your teeth and braces.

Ahhhh...doesn't it feel good to have clean teeth?!! Love that feeling! :D

Dr. Tina Siu and team, supporting National Smile Month

Now that we’re in June, Dr. Tina Siu and our staff thought we’d tell you June is National Smile Month, which is a great time to remind all our patients to practice good oral hygiene between your visits to Siu Orthodontics.

Below are a few steps you can take during your treatment to improve your oral health so that you may celebrate National Smile Month for many, many more years to come!

* Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Here's a helpful video showing you how to brush with your braces on.
* Floss everyday to thoroughly clean between your teeth.
* Reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks during your orthodontic treatment with Dr. Siu.
* Visit your general dentist regularly (usually every six months apart).

If you have questions about any of these tips, we encourage you to give us a call at 626-537-4170!

We want everyone to get out there and share your beautiful smiles with the rest of San Marino! Have a terrific upcoming week!

~ Clayton

"They're off! It feels great to have my braces off. I just bit into my first whole apple two days ago. I haven't been able to do that for two years and my teeth feel fantastic! I love my new smile!"

How do Dr. Siu and team 'Go Green'?

Our team at Siu Orthodontics know that we are living in an age when more and more people have a renewed commitment to conservation, and are frequently reminded to recycle, reduce and reuse. We, too, have taken steps to make our office more environmentally-friendly.

We have a digital X-ray machine that our registered dental assistants can take wonderful radiographs with - the results are instant and are on the computer and in our patients' files quickly and easily. These digital radiographs can be sent by our front office, Kathy, to the patient's dentist or oral surgeon by email as well.

In addition, using the digital radiographs keeps us from creating hazardous waste with developer and fixer when developing hard copy radiographs. The computer treatment records have been a great way to go green at our office as well. And no more treatment cards to lose! We back up our system daily so we know we will have our patients records available no matter what happens. The treatment chart is also connected to the photos, radiographs and all correspondence related to our patient that is scanned into the computer. Technology is really an amazing thing!

Contest entrants should tell their stories on video, and answer the following questions:

* What were you like before you had orthodontic treatment?
* How have you changed How proud are you of your new smile?
* When did you notice changes in yourself?
* What kinds of changes have you noticed?
* What does your new smile mean to you?
* What would you say to others whose smiles make them self-conscious?

There will be two winners; the contest is open to students who are age 18 who have completed active orthodontic treatment (braces must have been removed) and be in the active retention phase of treatment or have completed active retention.

The contest guidelines provide instructions to contestants on submitting their videos, which are to be submitted on DVDs or USB flash drives and accompanied by a signed release. By July 1st, the two winners will be announced. Finalists will be notified by phone or email before June 15 and winners will be notified by phone or email before July 1st.

Dr. Siu and our entire team hope you'll find time to submit your video! GOOD LUCK!!

Lastly, Dr. Siu recently delivered retainers to one of her Invisalign patients and asked her, "What did you think about the Invisalign treatment, Alissa?"

"It was easier and much less painful than I expected," Alissa said. "In fact, it was so easy that I wondered if my teeth would move but before I knew it they were straight! I am happy with the results and so is my mother! The Invisalign treatment in Dr. Siu's office was a very simple process with excellent results."

We are happy to be able to provide the Invisalign treatment for the patients it works best for. It can be a very nice way to straighten your teeth without traditional braces. To learn more, please give us a call at 626-796-0615.

Dr. Siu in the San Marino community

Dr. Tina Siu is active in her community in numerous ways. First and foremost, she is devoted to the schools. She has been a Trustee or Associate Trustee on the board of the San Marino Schools Foundation (SMSF) since 1998. Fundraising for the schools in San Marino is the primary goal of the SMSF and Dr. Siu takes this to heart. Education is a core value for Dr. Siu and she continues to strive for the best possible education for her own children and the students in her community.

Secondly, Dr. Siu cares about the dental health and education of everyone she can reach out to. There are numerous community service groups that provide dental screenings for the children in lower income areas. Dr. Siu gladly participates in these screenings to help find the students who need dental care.

Finally, Dr. Siu has been President of the Rotary Club of Alhambra. Her primary contribution during her year as president was to raise funds to provide a dental chair for the dental mobile clinic that services the lower income areas of Los Angeles and down to Mexico.

Community service is very important to Dr. Tina Siu. She believes in giving back to the community that has given so much to her. To learn more about Dr. Siu's commitment to serving the San Marino community, please give us a call.

Thanks again to local dentists!

Our office had a party in appreciation of the dental offices in San Marino, Arcadia, Pasadena, Alhambra and surrounding communities that refer to their patients to Dr. Siu. We had about 60 people there, ate delicious food from a local caterer (Sweet and Savory) and had a great time socializing with dentists and their staff that we don't get to see that often. Dr. Siu also had a raffle for 10 AMC movie gift cards and a $100 gift card to Gold Class Cinemas in Pasadena!

The winners were:
10 AMC movie gift cards for Dr. Anderson, Kelly from Dr. Rose's office, Martha from Dr. Arase's office, April and Donna from Dr. Joe's office, Arlene and Modesta from Dr. Beeman's office and Dr. Im!

The $100 gift card will go to Jeanette from Dr. Im's office! Great job everybody!!
